Hi all, I’m at home recovering from surgery so I am living vicariously through you. I just wanted to let you know everything is going well and I’ll be back in the saddle in about 6 weeks. I’d love to here your stories of tomorrow night’s ride if the weather holds.
Near the FM 3286 bridge we got about one inch of rain last night so I think the trail will soak it up quickly. This is my first blog here so forgive me if the format doesn’t seem right. A group of us rode the trail from our area south to Brockdale Sunday and had a great time. Moonshine was gaiting well.
We found that there was blockage on the unofficial lower trail just north of the FM 3286 bridge. A storm came through and twisted and broke several fairly large trees which have obstructed the trail. Carole Kowitt and I went back Sunday afternoon and cut a crude alternative path through the rubble.
Watch for the stake fashioned as an arrow to tell you where to turn. As soon as I can get the pictures of the trees downloaded, I will post them. We also talked to the construction forman for the Blackland Prairie Rehabilitation Center and they are making great progress on the bird cages for rehabbing.
They have moved two trailers onto the site temporarily and are renovating them for an office and a bird hospital while they build a permanent building. They had boy scouts out cleaning up the area which will eventually be a public information area. They have promised us a visit before they close the rehab center to the public and horses.
The birds cannot have human or horse contact while in rehabilitation. Paul, the forman, said that they could plan a “bird release” at one of our events in the future. How cool is that?

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackI am an old, but new member, who needs to find some riding buddies so my hours on the trail will improve my “back in the saddle again” relationship with a new horse. We tried to make the “spook clinic” but my horse’s coggins was in Irving and I couldn’t find a human to send it. Your people handling the clinic were wonderful, trying to come up with solutions, but I conceeded defeat when our time ran out. Maybe a few of the beginning members remember me when I lived on Brookhaven Dr. but I disappeared in the late 1990’s to wait for my death. I was diagnosed with leukemia and there was a new treatment but no long term prognosis. Being the fatalist I am, I decided to wait out my time on my own “Death Row”. It wasn’t until 2007, when my new friend from Camp Rusk, a retirement ranch for horses from all over the world, gave me a 5 yr old Arab gelding and told me to get my ‘*&#@’ out of my recliner and “live”. After much rehabilitation and exercise I am riding. In fact, I completed my first horsemanship clinic last Sat 7/25/09 after not ‘really’ riding for >10 years. I stayed on my ‘boy’ for 4 hours of forward motion, leg pressure, diagonals, and leads. The trainer always tops it off with riding the trails through the hills and woods of South Paw Ranch teasing us with some learning techniques we never recognize til were done.
Now I want more..I want to try the trails of my new group but am also a realist as well as a fatalist. I will not worry my friends and family by riding alone, or ask too much of my ‘boy’ and his understanding of the area. It is my desire to start making it to the rides, clean-ups, and meetings, but I am aware of my limitations. You might say that this is a request for any of you who ride the trails outside of the programmed times. I can get to the site by myself to meet up with who ever is planning a ride and wants to help me get time on the trails, under my belt, and in the saddle.
If you email me or call me with possible times I will work my schedule out so I can tag along.
Please excuse my forwardness about this issue because I could not come up with an alternative way to snag riding partners.
Thankyou so much,
Candice Hawkins 214-906-1005
I think the bird release sounds awesome! I was thinking of riding north to the sycamore on Sunday, but see that the trail is closed from Highland Park! Bummer. Glad this site is up and running and informing!
Heal quickly, Tracy.

Candice, thanks for writing in. I think all of us who are into horses can think of times where horses helped us get through difficult periods. Horses seem to pick up on our emotions and know how to heal us. I’m glad you got back into riding and rejoined life.
I look forward to meeting you and riding with you. I’ll drop you an email separately to set up a time. Meanwhile, keep riding and go hug that friend who pushed you back toward horses.
Chris
